Roof Repair Insurance Coverage Questioned

Austin--Some insurance companies
are misleading homeowners about the
extent of roof repairs required by
their homeowners insurance policies,
warns Commissioner of Insurance Georgia
Flint.
After recent hail storms in Austin
and near Dallas, some insurers have
insisted that replacement of a damaged
roof in certain cases include only
an overlay of new composition shingles--not
removal of the old, damaged shingles.
An overlay can save insurance companies
several hundred dollars in the cost
of normal roof replacement
"Apparently some insurance
companies believe that an overlay
is sufficient," Flint said. "We
strongly disagree."
flint has directed the Texas Department
of Insurance's consumer services
program to pursue roof replacement
complaints vigorously.
